MSA Applications Up 50%

The number of applications for admission to the Master of Science in Analytics (MSA) degree program is running 52% ahead of last year’s pace. Based on the current rate the Institute projects a record number of applications will be reviewed for admission to the Class of 2012, and perhaps as high as 200—or a 5:1 ratio of applicants to seats available.

“We’re very pleased with both the number and quality of applications,” said the Institute’s director, Dr. Michael Rappa:

It’s a great pool of talent for us to draw from as we select the next MSA cohort. With just 40 seats to fill, gaining admission has become extremely competitive. Had we the capacity to admit more students, we certainly would, but budgetary constraints at the university prevent the Institute from doing so. With NC State’s highest average starting salaries and near-perfect record of job placement each year, it’s disappointing not to be able to offer the MSA degree to more students—most of whom live in North Carolina and remain here to work after graduation.

Although the Institute will begin admitting applicants in the coming month, Dr. Rappa stresses that it is not too late to submit an application:

Prospective students may not realize how quick and easy it is to apply. Academic transcripts, the names of three references, a resume, and a brief statement of objectives is all that is needed to initiate the process. Men and women returning from active duty in the armed services, and who are looking to enter the workforce as Analytics professionals, are especially encouraged to apply. We also look for top-notch experienced professionals who may be in transition, and who want to jump-start their career. The 10-month MSA may be just the right opportunity for mid-career individuals.

The typical MSA cohort ranges in age from 22 to 55, and about half have professional experience before joining the program. Many already hold advanced degrees, including MBA’s and Ph.D.’s.
