A special feature of the MSA program is the option for students to gain valuable professional certifications in parallel with their degree. Such certifications include SAS (Base Programming, Advanced Programming, and Predictive Modeling), Six Sigma (Green Belt), and communication skills from industry trainer. Individuals with professional certifications are highly sought after by employers. In the first three months of the program, 95% of the MSA Class of 2009 have passed one or more SAS programming certifications. Another 80% of the class is working toward becoming Green Belts using JMP.
The Six Sigma curriculum is taught by NC State’s College of Engineering Industrial Extension Service in conjunction with the College of Textiles Extension Education unit. Over the course of seven days, students learn Six Sigma methods to measure, analyze, improve, and control critical processes to achieve cost saving objectives. Students learn how to use proven management techniques and statistical methods such as cause and effect diagrams and design of experiment theory to quantify solve problems. The curriculum, which was interactive and hands on, refines students’ ability to define objectives, collect data and conduct graphical analysis using JMP. They further develop their ability to use JMP for basic data analysis, trending and process control design. Students who pass the final written exam receive the Green Belt “Certificate of Completion.” Upon graduation students can conduct a Six Sigma project (with their employer) to become fully certified as a Six Sigma Green Belt.
