Debating Big Data

The Institute’s director, Dr. Michael Rappa, spoke to a large group of students and faculty today at Hofstra University, site of the upcoming first Presidential Debate in Hempstead, New York. In anticipation of the historic event Hofstra is hosting a series of discussions on hot topics including the transformational impact of Big Data analytics on business. Dr. Rappa was joined by a panel of distinguished executives including: Diane Garnick, Managing Director & Chief Income Strategist, TIAA, a leading financial services provider; Timothy Cecere, Chief Talent Officer, GroupM, the world’s largest media investment group; Dr. Yosef Dlugacz, Senior Vice President, Krasnoff Quality Management Institute and Chief of Clinical Quality, Education and Research, NorthWell Health System; and John Turato, Vice President of Technology, Avis. The panel was moderated by Dr. Farrokh Nasri, Professor of Information Systems and Business Analytics at Hofstra.

“What is beyond debate is that we now live in an world that is infused with data,” said Dr. Rappa. “Understanding the data ecosystem is paramount. Whether it’s your career goal to become a data scientist, or not, in many domains our ability to draw insights from large, fast-streaming sources of data is becoming a key skill requirement in today’s workforce. The mission of the Institute is to create data savvy professionals who can thrive in this new reality.”
