This month's musings from Bill Rand, Goodnight Executive Director, Institute for Advanced Analytics
Strengthening Our Roots: The IAA and the Wolfpack
As we move into a new academic cycle, I find myself reflecting on the unique position the Institute for Advanced Analytics holds within the landscape of higher education. For years, we have operated as a vanguard of data science, but as we look to the future, we are intentionally turning our focus back to the foundation that makes our work possible: our home at NC State University.
A New Digital Identity
One of the most visible changes you will notice is the launch of our redesigned website (analytics.ncsu.edu). This isn’t just a cosmetic update; it is a strategic alignment. The new site will feature prominent NC State branding, signaling to the world that we are a proud and integral part of this university.
The NC State brand is exceptionally strong. By embracing it more fully, we remind our partners and the broader community that the IAA is backed by one of the premier research institutions in the country. This relationship is mutually beneficial: it highlights that the world’s oldest and boldest data science program is housed right here at NC State, while further anchoring the IAA within the prestige of the Wolfpack family.
Expanding Our Campus Footprint
Our commitment to NC State extends far beyond our visual identity. We are deepening our robust partnership with the Poole College of Management to bridge the gap between technical analytics and business leadership. This collaboration has already yielded exciting results, including the arrival of Associate Teaching Professor Hunter Glanz and our first new Goodnight Scholar in over a decade, Jorge Mejia.
We are also advancing our work with the Data Science and AI Academy, where IAA faculty are leading efforts to integrate AI competency university-wide. Simultaneously, we are initiating exploratory conversations with the Department of Statistics and the Department of Computer Science to investigate synergies in mathematical rigor and computational power. These efforts ensure the IAA remains at the intersection of industry demand and academic excellence.
The Value of Connection
To our alumni and practicum sponsors — many of whom are NC State graduates yourselves — this recommitment is for you. It ensures that the degree or the partnership you hold continues to grow in value and recognition. We are not just an institute; we are a vital part of a great family.
As we are fond of quoting here at NC State (inspired by Rudyard Kipling): “For the Strength of the Wolf is the Pack, and the Strength of the Pack is the Wolf.”
