If there is one thing that rivals my passion for data science education, it’s my lifelong love for all things Disney, Marvel and Star Wars. So, you can imagine my excitement when I recently had the opportunity to combine these worlds when I was invited to speak at the Disney Data Analytics Conference (DDAC).

There is a certain kind of magic that goes into creating the experiences we love at Disney parks and in our favorite cinematic universes, but as data professionals, we know that behind the magic is an incredible amount of data and analytics.

I spoke on a topic that is very relevant to the Institute: The Future of Data Science Education in the Age of Generative AI. The pace of change in our field is staggering, and integrating AI into our curriculum isn’t just about teaching students how to prompt a chatbot; it’s about developing the skill they need to work with AI as a teammate.

To help our students navigate this new frontier, we use a 2×2 framework of AI literacy here at the Institute. I shared these four pillars during my talk, and I want to share them with you as well:

• Learn AI: This is about demystifying the “Black Box.” Before we can trust these systems, we have to understand their mechanics — like next-token prediction — as well as their limitations, ethical boundaries and the responsible oversight required to lead AI-driven projects.
• Learn with AI: We want our students to treat AI as a collaborative, personalized tutor. When used correctly, AI can massively accelerate the mastery of new concepts and augment critical thinking both inside and outside the classroom.
• Build AI: We are moving beyond specialized coding into an era of natural language interfaces. We teach our students the underlying architecture, data pipelines and training foundations of generative models so they can create completely new tools.
• Build with AI: Finally, this is where the rubber meets the road. We focus heavily on applied implementation — teaching students how to integrate AI tools to automate workflows, develop products, and manage autonomous business systems that deliver real-world value.

Just like a Jedi learning to build and wield a lightsaber, or Tony Stark iterating on his Iron Man suits, or even Mickey learning how to control magic in Fantasia, our students need a deep, fundamental understanding of their tools to use them effectively and responsibly. As the oldest and boldest data science program in the world, we are committed to ensuring our graduates aren’t just replaced by AI, but become the leaders who wield it to create tangible business impact.
