Academics

The M.S. in Analytics curriculum evolves with the landscape of data science.

One Degree. Many Opportunities.

We like to say that our Master of Science in Analytics is more technical than a business degree and more business-oriented than a computer science degree. Every organization has data to manage and analyze, so we design the program to help you develop practical data science skills that can be applied to any sector.

The Institute for Advanced Analytics, home of the M.S. in Analytics program, continuously monitors industry changes and adjusts the curriculum accordingly.

A Dynamic Curriculum

Our curriculum includes courses in statistical methods and coding, but the content they cover changes every year. We survey our alumni and industry partners to understand the tools and techniques they’re using and the trends they’re observing. True to our craft, we take this data and apply our findings to create an updated curriculum.

In the age of AI, it’s important for data science professionals to learn how to leverage the technology in their work. But employers also value the ability to code from scratch, in order to troubleshoot if AI doesn’t produce the desired output. Our curriculum incorporates both AI and traditional computer programming to set our students up for success.

The program is structured to feel more like a work environment. Students spend Monday-Friday learning together in classrooms and collaborating on projects in conference rooms. Students also immediately put their learning into practice through a required eight-month practicum, in which they help a real organization solve a business problem.

Helping Our Students Thrive

We help our students land jobs in data science and thrive in their careers. While M.S. in Analytics students have access to all of NC State’s resources, we also offer in-house career services and professional development coaching teams. They guide students from the classroom to the boardroom, connecting students with opportunities and corresponding with employers to understand market needs. They help students prepare for job interviews, optimize their resumes, negotiate salaries and market themselves effectively. They’re also available for one-on-one professional development coaching.

Our career services team also tracks the number of interviews and job offers students get in order to improve the program for the next cohort.

“The Institute for Advanced Analytics has one of the most comprehensive, student-centered learning models in the nation. The practicum emphasizes critical thinking, collaboration, and applying analytical skills to develop a real product — because that’s the only way the brain truly learns.”
