Director Speaks at Digital Media Conference

The Institute’s director, Dr. Michael Rappa, spoke today at the Internet Summit, the Southeast’s largest gathering of people and companies focused on digital media, which is held in Raleigh each year at the Convention Center. Dr. Rappa led a session on “Big Insights from Big Data,” with a talk on the emerging role of data scientists. The session included Brian d’Alessandro (VP of Data Science, Dstillery), Julie Lockner (VP, Information LMS, Informatica), and Srinidhi Kondaji (Software Engineer, Data Science, Eventbrite).

Villanes Wins Best Poster Award

Congratulations to Andrea Villanes, the Institute’s research associate, who took home the Best Poster Award at the 21st Annual Meeting of the Southeast SAS Users Group (SESUG) in St. Pete Beach, Florida. Andrea’s poster, Analytical Approach for Bot Cheating Detection in a Massive Multiplayer Online Racing Game, is based on her master’s thesis in Computer Science. The poster will be featured at other SAS conferences in the coming year. Andrea joined the Institute’s staff full-time in July after earning her M.S. in Computer Science.

The Institute’s director, Dr. Michael Rappa, gave the opening keynote lecture today at the Campbell Law Review Symposium hosted by the Campbell University Wiggins School of Law. This year’s theme for the Symposium was “The Evolving Role of the Corporate Counsel: How Information Technology is Reinventing Legal Practice.” Dr. Rappa’s talk provided an overview of the rapid advances in analytics in recent years and the implications of “big data” for the legal community.

The Institute’s director, Dr. Michael Rappa, was in Los Angeles today to speak with attendees at the annual conference of the Council of American Survey Research Organizations (known as CASRO). CASRO brings together senior executives across companies engaged in consumer marketing research. It’s a field that’s going through rapid changes due to advances in business analytics and the proliferation of data through social media and mobile technologies. Dr. Rappa spoke about the Institute’s innovative model for educating the data savvy professionals, the Master of Science in Analytics, now in its seventh year.

The NFL’s defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens lead this year’s roster of practicum project sponsors for the Master of Science in Analytics (MSA) Class of 2014. The Ravens are joined by Major League Baseball’s Houston Astros as the two professional sports clubs among 17 sponsors in total. The projects—which span aerospace, autos, chemicals, apparel, consumer product goods, banking, air transportation, healthcare, lodging, and government—were selected from 56 proposals submitted to the Institute. New this year to the list of sponsors are: Cisco, Eastman Chemical, J.M. Smucker & Co., Premier, Recall, Rex Healthcare, SchoolDude, United Airlines, and Volvo. Information Session Dates

Prospective applicants to the Master of Science in Analytics (MSA) degree program are encouraged to attend one of the many information sessions, which begin in September and are held throughout the fall semester. Attendees will learn about the MSA curriculum and how to apply for admission. Please come and meet the staff and tour the Institute’s facilities. Seating on any given date is limited, so be sure to register in advance if you plan to attend.

NSA Announces New Analytics Lab

The National Security Agency announced today the establishment of the Laboratory for Analytic Sciences (LAS) located adjacent to the Institute on NC State’s Centennial Campus. The $60 million lab will be a cornerstone of the emerging advanced data innovation hub at NC State, bringing together some of the brightest minds from government, academia, and industry to collaborate on the most challenging big data problems. “We have chosen the Research Triangle area for its vibrant academic and industry interest in large data analytics, and NC State for having the nation’s first, and preeminent, advanced degree program in data analytics,” said Dr. Michael Wertheimer, Director of Research, NSA. “By immersing intelligence analysts with NC State’s diverse group of scientists, we hope to discover new and powerful ways to meet our foreign signals intelligence and information assurance missions – giving us an edge to better protect the nation.”

In his presentation, Dr. Rappa provided an overview of the Master of Science in Analytics and its success in meeting the growing demand for data scientists. Dr. Rappa was joined on the panel by Bill Howe (University of Washington), Michelle Christine Dunn (National Cancer Institute), Nandini Kannan (NSF) and session chair, Sastry Pantula (Dean of the College of Science at Oregon State University).
