Class of 2010 Commencement Held

MSA2010 GraduationDiplomas were awarded to thirty-nine candidates for the MSA degree at the spring commencement exercise today. Students celebrated their achievement with two hundred family and friends at the Institute’s ceremony held at the Raleigh Convention Center. The Class of 2010 is the third cohort of students to graduate from the MSA program since its establishment in 2007. The MSA alumni society now stands at 97 members strong and growing.

2010 Director’s Prize

Jennifer Holmes is this year’s winner of the Director’s Prize for the top graduate in the Master of Science in Analytics (MSA). Jennifer receives the prize in recognition of her superior performance throughout the 10-month degree program. Aric LaBarr

LaBarr Awarded Ph.D.

Congratulations to Aric LaBarr on the successful completion of his doctorate in Statistics. Dr. LaBarr joined the Institute  as a graduate teaching assistant in 2009. He lectures and tutors students in the Master of Science in Analytics (MSA) program on various subjects including statistics, applied mathematics, and computer programming. His teaching at NC State earned him a nomination for the University’s “Most Outstanding Teaching Assistant” award in 2009. Dr. LaBarr’s dissertation is titled “Multivariate Robust Estimation of DCC-GARCH Volatility Model.” Dr. LaBarr also received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Statistics from NC State.

Chinese Delegation Visits

A delegation of academic officials from seven universities across Mainland China visited the Institute to learn about its pioneering Master of Science in Analytics (MSA) degree program. In April the Ministry of Education in China approved the establishment of an applied statistics degree similar to the MSA for Chinese universities. Major centers of learning in Statistics and Economics in China are now competing to be granted the opportunity by the Ministry to offer the degree to their students. Director Hosts Web Conference

WWW 2010The Institute’s director, Dr. Michael Rappa, and his colleague Paul Jones of UNC-Chapel Hill, chaired the 19th International World Wide Web Conference at the beautiful Raleigh Convention Center. The conference brought together 1,000 researchers from around the world to discuss the challenges facing the Web community and the latest research on the technologies that make it possible. The week-long conference included 200 technical papers and posters as well as numerous keynotes, panel discussions, workshops, tutorials, demos, and other elements to the program. Local arrangements for the conference were coordinated by Kathy Green, who managed the three-year project from beginning to end to a successful completion under budget. The conference received universal praise from attendees as a resounding success.

Curriculum Gains Administrative Approval

The six courses that makeup the Institute’s Master of Science in Analytics (MSA) degree have been granted approval by the Administrative Board of the Graduate School at NC State University. The MSA courses are now part of the university’s official graduate course catalog. The approval of the courses represents the end of the experimental phase of the MSA curriculum and a major milestone in the four-year history of the program. The MSA degree is the first of its kind in the nation and has set a high standard for graduate education in Analytics.

Forecasting Workshop Held

Charlie Chase, author of Demand-Driven Forecasting, gave a hands-on workshop to students in the Master of Science in Analytics today. Chase is Business Enablement Manager for Manufacturing and Supply Chain Global Practice at SAS. He is the principal architect and strategist for delivering demand planning and forecasting solutions to improve supply chain efficiencies for SAS customers. He has more than twenty-six years of experience in the consumer packaged goods industry and is an expert in sales forecasting, market response modeling, econometrics, and supply chain management.

Laura Ladrie

Ladrie Honored at Award Reception

The Office of the Provost held its reception for nominees of the university’s 2010 Awards for Excellence. This year, the Institute’s academic program coordinator, Laura Ladrie, was cited as an Award nominee. Laura joined the Institute in 2007, to become the third full-time member of the staff. Michael Rappa

Director Joins Computer Science Faculty

Dr. Michael Rappa, the director and founder of the Institute for Advanced Analytics and Distinguished University Professor, has accepted an invitation to become a member of the Computer Science faculty in the College of Engineering. Advisory Board Meeting Held

The Institute’s Industry Advisory Board convened in Raleigh today to review the Master of Science in Analytics (MSA) degree program and offer suggestions regarding the curriculum. The Board includes representatives from 40 companies across a wide spectrum of industry—including banking and financial services, consulting, energy, Internet, manufacturing, retail, software, telecommunications and transportation. Fifty executives attended the meeting. The agenda included invited talks by Chuck Musciano, VP and CIO, Martin Marietta Materials, and Dr. Radhika Kulkarni, VP for Advanced Analytics R&D, SAS Institute.

Job Placement Sets Record Pace

For the third straight year employer demand for MSA graduates remains strong despite the global economic recession. Job placement for the Class of 2010, which began in mid-January, is off to a record-setting pace. The number of companies scheduling campus interviews has already exceeded the number in prior years. Before the semester ends in April, the Institute will have arranged interviews with as many as twenty-five companies for the cohort of 39 students. The average number of interviews per student also will reach a new high. Half of the companies scheduled to interview visited in 2008 or 2009, as well, and about half are located outside of North Carolina. Several employers are seeking to hire more than one student.

Applications for MSA Class of 2011

Review of applications for the MSA Class of 2011 begins this month. It is not too late to apply for admission. The MSA is the nation’s first full-fledged graduate degree in Analytics. It is a uniquely designed cohort program that blends elements of applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, and various business disciplines into an integrated 10-month curriculum. The customized courses have a strong practical focus on the tools, methods and application of advanced analytics. Students work extensively in teams throughout the program. Students are admitted with a wide variety of academic backgrounds and professional experience. Admission is competitive given the limited number of seats. Prospective students are encouraged to apply early.

Students Gain Career Insights

A panel of six members of the Triangle Technology Executives Council (TTEC) held a wide-ranging discussion with MSA students today focused on professional career development. Panelists include TTEC President and CEO John Crites, as well as members Tony Verdone, vice president of development and operations at MediClick; Sid Mitchener, partner at Vaco Raleigh LLC; Chuck Musciano, CIO of Martin Marietta Materials; and Craig Stone, CEO of HireNetworks. The discussion was moderated by TTEC member Susan Kellogg, CIO and associate dean of IT at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. MSA Team takes Championship

MSA students have proven themselves as superb team players on the field as they are in the classroom. A team of MSA students have won the flag football championship in the graduate student, faculty and staff division for Fall of 2009. The team balanced rigorous MSA studies with practice scrimmages and exhilarating flag football games throughout the Fall to arrive at the exciting championship game in November. The winning season culminated in a triumphant 38-21 victory in the championship game. Holiday Food Drive Sets Record

Thanks to the many students, staff and faculty who participated in the Institute’s annual holiday food drive to benefit the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. Student organizers this year included Deborah Nicholas, Marco Mascioli, Amy Drew and Charlie Board. The record setting donation totaled 339 pounds of food (up by 73%) and $545 (up by 40%). Using the Food Bank’s formula, the donation translates into 2601 meals. The students have set a high bar for next year’s MSA Class of 2011.
